Grade 1 Language

In Grade 1 Language, our students are introduced to words and language in a wide variety of ways. By exploring different texts and forms of media, they will start their journey to mastery of the English language and try their hand at being authors, song-writers, poets, and presenters. This course is designed to be 200-300 instructional hours.

Fiction

In the Fiction Unit, students will learn to read and demonstrate an understanding of various literary, graphic, and informational texts using a range of strategies to construct meaning. They will also recognize a variety of text forms, text features, and stylistic elements, and demonstrate an understanding of how these components help communicate meaning. Furthermore, they will listen in order to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

Non-Fiction

In the Non-Fiction Unit, students will learn how to generate, gather, and organize ideas and information in order to write for an intended purpose and audience. They will also create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques.

Instructions

In the Instructions Unit, students will learn how to use knowledge of words and cueing systems to read fluently. They will also draft and revise their writing using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms and various stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience.

Songs

In the Songs Unit, students will learn to listen in order to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes. They will also demonstrate an understanding of various media texts.

Poetry

In the Poetry Unit, students will learn how to generate, gather, and organize ideas and information in order to write for an intended purpose and audience. They will use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills/strategies, as well as a knowledge of language conventions to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work effectively. They will also use speaking skills and strategies appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

Advertising

In the Advertising Unit, students will learn how to demonstrate an understanding of a variety of media texts. They will identify some media forms and explain how the conventions and techniques associated with each are used. They will also draft and revise their writing using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms and various stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience.

Media Texts

In the Media Texts Unit, students will learn how to demonstrate an understanding of various media texts. They will create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques. They will also identify and reflect on the following areas: their strengths as media interpreters and creators, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in understanding and creating media texts.

Presentations

In the Presentations Unit, students will learn to use speaking skills and strategies appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes. They will identify and reflect on the following areas: their strengths as listeners and speakers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in oral communication situations. They will also create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques.

This course is entirely online and does not require nor rely on any textbook. Students will require the following resources:

  • A scanner, smartphone camera, or similar device to digitize handwritten or hand-drawn work
  • A device to record audio
  • A printer
  • A physical binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • Various household items to complete offline activities
  • Popsicle sticks, building blocks, letter tiles, dictionary, highlighter, additional texts, recipes, posters, letters, headphones

Through a balance of problem-solving and direct instruction, students develop a strong foundation of language processes, knowledge, and skills to apply in real-world contexts. The course utilizes a combination of technology and offline activities, providing opportunities to develop an understanding of skills and concepts in interactive and concrete ways and to engage multiple learning styles. The lessons feature a variety of intriguing storylines, characters, videos, storybooks, and interactive games that reinforce students’ learning. These activities also build a foundation of reading, writing, oral communication, and media literacy that students will use throughout the elementary grades.

The course relies on the assistance of a teacher to support young students through the content. The teacher will be involved in facilitating the course content, and participating in discussion-based activities to assist students in developing communication skills.
