Grade 5 Health and Physical Education

In Grade 5 Health and Physical Education, our students will further develop skills and strategies in a variety of engaging games. Students will investigate the effects of alcohol use and strategies for decision making related to addictive substances. Expanding their fitness knowledge, they will explore jumping, dance, and locomotor movements, and incorporate all of these into a personal health plan. Regarding human development, students will learn about the male and female reproductive systems. They will also learn about mental illness and supporting mental health. This course is designed to be 50-75 instructional hours.

Personal and Physical Safety

In the Personal and Physical Safety unit, students will learn the importance of physical activity safety and how to be proactive in regard to setting safety measures in place to reduce the dangers that come along with outdoor activities. They will learn how to properly engage with emotional responses to other’s actions as effects of both negative and positive actions on self and others will be discussed. Further, students will gain many health supports to cope with stress and mental health and will develop strategies to respond safely in threatening situations.

Sportsmanship and Games

In the Games unit, students will learn the basic components and common features of target, net/wall, striking/fielding, and territory games. They will demonstrate strategies and tactical solutions to engage in these games successfully. They will also learn strategies and behaviours that will enhance their readiness to participate in physical activity, as well as strategies to overcome obstacles that are causing them to be inactive. Further, students will learn the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork and how they increase the chances of success during these activities.

Healthy Behaviours

In the Healthy Behaviours unit, students will learn how to read and utilize nutrition fact tables, as well as ingredient lists, in order to make healthier and safer food choices. They will learn about food in the media and how marketing, advertising, and media promotion techniques are used to persuade us to buy the product. They will understand the effects of alcohol use, the short- and long-term effects of alcohol and the factors that affect alcohol intoxication. Further, students will be introduced to the personal and social factors that can influence alcohol and cannabis use. They will develop skills relating to healthy decision making and refusal strategies to deal with pressures related to addictive substances.

Creative Movement and Physical Health

In the Creative Movement and Physical Health unit, students will learn how to control their jump for both height and distance. They will learn the many purposes of dance and will identify factors that make it difficult to be physically active everyday. In addition, they will perform a variety of locomotor movements and will learn how these movements are affected by direction, level, pathway, and relationship. Further, students will develop skills regarding health-related fitness components and how different types of physical activity can bring different benefits to their life. They will the learn fitness test for each health-related fitness component discussed and how the results of these tests can be used to create S.M.A.R.T goals as part of their personal health plan.

Human Development and Mental Health

In the Human Development and Mental Health unit, students will learn about the male and female reproductive systems and how the body changes during puberty. They will dive deeper into the process of reproduction by learning about menstruation and spermatogenesis. In addition, students will understand factors that affect the development of self-concept and how these factors support health and well-being. They will learn the difference between mental health and mental illness and how they can help others who may need additional mental health supports.

This course is entirely online and does not require nor rely on any textbook. Students will require the following resources:

  • A scanner, smartphone camera, or similar device to digitize handwritten or hand-drawn work
  • A device to record audio
  • A printer
  • A physical binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • Various household items to complete offline activities
  • Socks, broom or stick, cans or water bottles

Through a balance of problem-solving and direct instruction, students develop a strong foundation of health and physical education processes, knowledge, and skills to apply in real-world contexts. The course utilizes a combination of technology and offline activities, providing opportunities to develop an understanding of skills and concepts in interactive and concrete ways and engage multiple learning styles. The lessons feature a variety of intriguing storylines, characters, videos, storybooks, and interactive games to reinforce students’ learning. These activities also build a foundation of health and physical education-related terms that students will use throughout the elementary grades.

The course relies on the assistance of a teacher to support young students through the content. The teacher will be involved in facilitating the course content, and participating in discussion-based activities to assist students in developing communication skills.
